What is legionella and why conduct regular testing?
Legionella bacteria are usually found in water. They multiply when temperatures are between 20-45°C and available nutrients are present (scale, rust, material, etc.). Unfortunately, the bacteria can cause Legionnaires disease, which is a potentially fatal type of pneumonia. It can be contracted by inhaling airborne water droplets containing viable Legionella bacteria.
Such droplets can be produced by hot and cold-water outlets. Also, aerosols can be created by water systems that generate a spray such as showers, decorative fountains, jacuzzis, spa pools, sprinkler systems and evaporative cooling towers.
Therefore, where there is a potential legionella risk, there is a legal requirement that the risk should be mitigated and managed.
